Age of the Unit
Potentially the biggest factor of all is how old your HVAC system is. Generally speaking, most HVAC systems begin to severely decline around the age of 12-15, depending on how well maintained they have been throughout the years. If your A/C unit has been suffering lots of repairs lately and is quite old, you can assume that your unit is at the end of its lifespan. In either case, call Academy Air to have one of our technicians inspect your unit, walk you through your options, answer any questions, and provide you with a price quote for either repair or replacement services. You can trust that our techs at Academy Air will only ever recommend what is best for you!
Frequency of Repairs
As previously mentioned, if you are seeking professional repair services from Academy Air quite frequently, you may want to inquire about replacement options to see if it makes more financial sense. If your A/C unit is needing frequent repairs, this can actually cost more in the long run, rather than just replacing the unit entirely. You can rely on Academy Air for an honest opinion on whether you should repair or replace your air conditioning unit based on the frequency of repairs needed.
Cost of Repairs
If you are in fact needing consistent repairs on your HVAC system, when deciding whether to repair or replace the unit altogether, take into consideration the total cost of the repairs. If the repairs are happening more frequently, and are costing more each time, it is likely that your air A/C unit is nearing the end of its lifespan and the better financial decision would be to replace the unit as a whole. If you are in need of assistance repairing or replacing your HVAC system, you can always rely on Academy Air to help you make the right decision.
R-22 Freon
Lastly, it is important to take into consideration whether your current unit is using R-22 Freon as a refrigerant. R-22 Refrigerant has been recently discontinued in the U.S. and St. Louis, MO area, so if you are experiencing frequent, costly repairs, and your unit runs on R-22, you may as well replace the unit and install a new one altogether as R-22 is becoming less and less available.
A suffering A/C unit can display many different signs that it is in need of a repair. Some of the most common signs are:
If your home is taking forever to cool down, the airflow from your A/C unit is not working correctly. This could be due to a multitude of reasons such as a clogged air filter, a broken motor, or potentially something worse.
Obviously your A/C Unit should be cooling down your home – not warming it up! If your unit is blowing hot air, this is indicative of a possible compressor issue.
Whenever a home appliance is cycling too often, something is wrong. To diagnose the issue and repair the problem, call (314) 798-7466 as soon as possible.
High humidity throughout your home is usually a clear sign that your air conditioning unit is not cooling down your house properly, or at all for that matter.
If you notice foul smells permeating from your HVAC system, this is an obvious sign that something is not working correctly. If you fail to address the issue, the odors will likely worsen. Schedule a professional repair with Academy Air ASAP!
If your A/C unit is leaking that means the refrigerant inside your system is leaking which can be toxic and is an inarguable sign that your air conditioning unit is suffering and the issue will require Professional Repair Services from Academy Air.
If you notice a random increase on your monthly energy and utility bills, this is often a symptom of an internal issue within your HVAC system. In the event of increased energy bills, your A/C unit is no longer running efficiently which means you will need to call Academy Air for repair.

Ernest and Reggie came out and were thorough, personable, but professional. They installed new vanity with sink and new faucet and installed the new faucet in the other bathroom. Ernest removed the old vanity and got the new one installed while Reggie worked on replacing the old faucet in the other bathroom. Ernest explained what they were doing and how they were doing it so I got a plumbing lesson on top of the outstanding work. Thanks Ernest and Reggie.

Some signs that your air conditioner is not working properly include blowing warm air, utility bills increasing, and your A/C running constantly. Other indications your A/C is not working properly are any new or abnormal sounds or smells from by your unit. If you notice any of these issues, it is advised to call Academy Air and schedule service.
There are a few things to check before calling for a repair on your A/C unit. Check that the furnace filter isn’t clogged and that the air conditioner is on and set to a temperature that will cause it to cycle. Additionally, check that the thermostat is operational and replace the batteries, if necessary. If you know where the disconnects are located, check those as well, and note if anything smells, looks, or sounds unusual. If nothing is out of the ordinary, call (314) 798-7466 to schedule prompt air conditioning repair services.
If your air conditioner is having major trouble, it might not need one repair, but multiple major repairs. The cost of a major repair on your A/C can be just as expensive as buying a whole new unit, entirely. If your air conditioner is nearing the end of its lifespan, and if the repair cost is over 50% of the air conditioner itself, consider replacing your air conditioning system all together. In any case, you can rely on Academy Air for expert A/C repair and replacement services.
If your air conditioner is not too old or the repair isn’t more expensive than a replacement, then yes it is generally worth it to conduct a repair. If your A/C is older than 10 years old it is likely to continue to need repairs. Regardless of the problem, once it is diagnosed the cooling experts from Academy Air can help you decide what cooling solution is best for your home!
Your best bet is to ask friends and family for recommendations, or check online reviews. Look for a company that has been in business for several years and has experience servicing the type of air conditioner you own. Make sure they are licensed, insured and certified by your local Better Business Bureau.
The cost of air conditioning repair varies greatly depending on the type and complexity of the issue, as well as any parts or materials that may be required. An inspection by a qualified technician should provide an estimate of what it will cost to fix your system.
